Food safety for natural colors is nuanced and multidimensional.

Maintaining a risk-based food safety approach during a natural conversion movement is critical because naturally derived colors can introduce additional variability in composition, microbiological load, and supply chain complexity compared to synthetic alternatives. These changes may impact product safety, stability, processing parameters, allergen considerations, and overall product performance.

The following five examples highlighted by Sensient’s Quality Team highlight the importance of food safety standards in natural color:

Turmeric Pesticide Contamination

In 2026, the FDA issued a warning that chlorpyrifos, a prohibited pesticide, was detected in turmeric powder exported from India to Austria and Germany.

Paprika Oleoresin Adulteration

Certasure™ testing of paprika oleoresin from a new supplier revealed the presence of illegal synthetic dyes: Sudan Reds, a class of toxic dyes historically used to make powders appear fresh and more vibrant.

Gïk Wine Adulteration

A vendor claimed a color product was a natural mixture of white and red grapes enhanced with two organic pigments: indigo and anthocyanin. Sensient testing using proprietary internal methods discovered the wine contained FD&C Blue No. 1, along with additional unidentified synthetic colorants.

Blue Corn Fraud Detection

When a vendor supplied purple corn powder with dried kernels as “proof” of authenticity, our Certasure™ testing revealed the truth: zero natural color. The powder contained copper phthalocyanine, an industrial paper dye. The customer’s standard FD&C Blue No. 1 screen missed it entirely.

Raw Materials Sourced from
Sanctioned Region

Supply chain due diligence identified the sourcing of raw materials from Xinjiang, China, in violation of U.S. sanctions against human rights violations including forced labor.

These examples provide a glimpse into the risks associated with the natural color supply chain as it stands today and clearly illustrate the need for robust food safety awareness and testing standards.
